- Played on the Osborne Brothers' final MGM Records session in January 1963; also worked with Jimmy Martin and toured behind Roy Orbison.
- Married Grand Ole Opry star Jean Shepard on November 21, 1968; served as her manager for the rest of her career.
- The couple's son Corey Birchfield (born December 23, 1969) became a country songwriter; Jean Shepard died in September 2016 after nearly 48 years of marriage.
