Bluegrass Collection

The Osborne Brothers

Album · 1978 · CMH 9011

Bluegrass Collection (CMH 9011), released in 1978, is a two-LP set of twenty-four songs that Bobby and Sonny Osborne recorded that year at Hilltop Studios in Nashville. Sonny Osborne produced it and wrote the sleeve notes. Despite the title it is not a compilation of earlier Osborne records: the songs are newly recorded, and a dozen of them are credited to Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs or combinations of the three, among them the Monroe songs “Kentucky Waltz,” “Toy Heart” and “I’m Going Back to Old Kentucky,” and the Flatt and Scruggs songs “My Cabin in Caroline” and “Your Love Is Like a Flower.” Carter and Ralph Stanley are credited for “White Dove” and “A Vision of Mother.” A. E. Brumley’s “Rank Strangers” is also here, along with three of the Osbornes’ own: “Pain in My Heart” (Bobby Osborne with L. Richardson), “Lonesome Day” (Sonny and Bobby) and “This Heart of Mine (Can Never Say Goodbye)” (Bobby with P. Goble).

The band is Bobby Osborne on mandolin, Sonny Osborne on banjo, Ray Edenton on guitar, Benny Birchfield on high-strung guitar, Bob Moore on bass and Robby Osborne on drums, with Kenny Baker and Blaine Sprouse as twin fiddlers. The brothers had joined the Grand Ole Opry on 8 August 1964, and by 1978 had a long record of bluegrass and country hits behind them, including “Ruby, Are You Mad” (1956), the first bluegrass recording with twin banjos, and “Rocky Top” (1967).
