Del and Dawg Live!, released on Acoustic Disc in 2016, documents Del McCoury and David Grisman in concert — two of the most distinctive voices in acoustic American music, in a collaboration rooted in long mutual respect. McCoury, whose bluegrass lineage runs directly through a mid-1960s stint in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, and Grisman, whose 'dawg' mandolin reached far into jazz and beyond, meet on the traditional ground that anchored both their careers. The set mixes songs with the between-tune storytelling its subtitle promises, McCoury's undiminished high tenor set against Grisman's mercurial mandolin. The result honors the tradition while remaining unmistakably the work of two strong individual artists, caught loose and warm before an audience. It is a late-career meeting of friends whose rapport had been decades in the making.
