Del & Dawg Live!, subtitled Tunes & Tales by Del McCoury & David Grisman, was released by Acoustic Disc on 26 February 2016 as a two-disc set. Del McCoury (guitar and vocals) and David Grisman (mandolin and vocals) recorded it at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine, on 20 November 2015, with Grisman as producer.
The two met on 8 February 1963 at New York University in Greenwich Village, at the first show McCoury played with Bill Monroe, and gave their first show together three years later at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. According to Acoustic Disc, they shared stages at venues and festivals for decades before beginning, in 2014, the duo collaboration documented on the album.
The label counts 23 tunes: bluegrass classics, original instrumentals, and a medley dedicated to their late friend, the banjo innovator Bill Keith. The track list includes “East Virginia Blues,” “Dark Hollow,” “Toy Heart,” “Man of Constant Sorrow,” “Tennessee Waltz,” “Brakeman’s Blues” and “New River Train.” The Keith medley is built from “Devil’s Dream,” “Salt Creek” and “Shenandoah Breakdown,” and a farewell medley of “Life’s Railway to Heaven” and “Shalom Aleichem” closes the second disc. Between songs the set carries spoken tracks, among them “Intros” and “Meeting Up.”
