Divided & United: The Songs of the Civil War (ATO Records 88429) is a multi-artist tribute album presenting traditional and period songs from the American Civil War era in performances by contemporary folk, country, and bluegrass performers, assembled to mark the sesquicentennial of the conflict and its enduring presence in American musical memory. Ricky Skaggs plays mandolin, fiddle, and sings alongside a rotating cast of contributors drawn from across the roots music spectrum. The program draws from the period repertoire of both sides of the conflict — Union and Confederate songs, battlefield pieces, spirituals, and home-front laments — presented in acoustic arrangements that honor the original performance contexts while bringing the historical material into dialogue with the contemporary performers' own traditions. The project locates the Civil War at the center of American musical identity.
