Doin’ My Time, released on Sugar Hill (SHCD 3870) in September 1997, was the first solo album by fiddler Aubrey Haynie. It was recorded at 1103 Studios in Nashville, produced by Haynie, and engineered by Mark Howard, with liner notes by Eddie Stubbs. Eleven of its fourteen tracks are instrumentals, seven of them Haynie originals, including “Leavin’ Rosine,” “Tobacco Patch,” “White Bluff” and “Kentucky Hustler.” Haynie plays fiddle throughout and adds mandolin on several tracks.

Bryan Sutton plays guitar on nearly every track, Jerry Douglas plays Dobro on most of the full-band tracks, Dennis Crouch plays bass on most, and the banjo is played by Bela Fleck, Scott Vestal, Alan O’Bryant and Kevin Haynie, depending on the track. Mike Compton on mandolin and Roy Huskey Jr. on bass join Haynie for “Cherokee Shuffle” and “Trouble in Mind.”

The three vocal tracks are “Dark Hollow,” with Alan O’Bryant singing lead, Don Rigsby tenor and Ricky Skaggs baritone; the title song, written by Jimmie Skinner, sung by Dan Tyminski; and Bob Paisley’s “Forty Years of Trouble,” led by Rigsby with Gene Johnson on tenor and Skaggs on baritone. The album brought Haynie IBMA nominations for Emerging Artist of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year in 1998.
