Dream Scene, released by the Seldom Scene in 1996, finds the veteran Washington D.C. progressive bluegrass band well into their third decade. The Seldom Scene, founded in 1971 by John Duffey, Mike Auldridge, John Starling, Tom Gray, and Ben Eldridge, had pioneered the eclectic, sophisticated approach to bluegrass repertoire that drew on country, rock, folk, and pop while maintaining acoustic string band instrumentation. Their inclusion of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Bad Moon Rising' alongside 'Love of the Mountains' illustrates the catholic repertoire philosophy that had always distinguished the group. The album documents a band that had become an institution, playing with the relaxed authority of musicians who had long since proven their worth.
