Essential Bluegrass Gospel

Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass

Album · 2004 · CMH CD 6298

Essential Bluegrass Gospel is a 17-track CMH compilation (CD-6298) released on 13 July 2004. Lester Flatt formed the Nashville Grass after he and Earl Scruggs parted in 1969 and led it until his death on 11 May 1979. CMH’s description of the album names Curly Seckler, Marty Stuart and Betty Jean Robinson alongside Flatt.

According to Praguefrank’s Country Discographies, the Flatt tracks come from four earlier CMH sources. “I’m Gonna Sit Down Beside My Jesus,” “Heaven’s Bluegrass Band” and “The Night Daddy Passed Away” are from Heaven’s Bluegrass Band, cut in the summer of 1976 at Arthur Smith Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, with Flatt, Kenny Ingram on banjo, Marty Stuart on guitar and mandolin, Charles Nixon on dobro, Seckler on mandolin, Jack Hicks on bass and Paul Warren on fiddle. “Get in Line Brother” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” were recorded live in June 1977 at Lester Flatt’s Mount Pilot Festival near Pinnacle, North Carolina, and appeared on Lester Flatt’s Bluegrass Festival. “Little Brown Church” is from the 1978 album Pickin’ Time, produced by Arthur Smith. “What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul” and “Father’s Table Grace” were taken from a live show on 10 August 1975. Of these eight, the 1980 CMH album Lester Flatt’s Greatest Performance had already collected all but one.

The remaining tracks, including “There’s Gonna Be Singing,” “Back to the Cross,” “Wicked Man” and “Palms of Victory,” are credited to the Nashville Grass rather than to Flatt.
