Europe ’72 is a live triple album by the Grateful Dead, released in 1972 on Warner Bros. Records (3WX 2668). It was drawn from the band’s tour of Western Europe in April and May of that year, which Warner Bros. paid to have recorded on a professional 16-track machine. Individual tracks come from the Empire Pool at Wembley, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, the Olympia Theatre in Paris and the Lyceum in London.

The band on the record is Jerry Garcia on lead guitar and vocals, Bob Weir on rhythm guitar and vocals, Phil Lesh on bass, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on organ, harmonica and vocals, Keith Godchaux on piano, Donna Godchaux on backing vocals and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. It was the first album to include Keith and Donna Godchaux and the last to include Pigpen, who died in March 1973.

Most of the songs are Garcia, Weir and Robert Hunter originals, but a few are borrowed. “I Know You Rider,” credited as traditional with an arrangement by the Dead, comes from the Olympia Theatre in Paris, and Hank Williams’s “You Win Again” from the Lyceum. The album was later certified double platinum.
