Fiddler’s Green is Tim O’Brien’s 2005 album for Sugar Hill, released on 13 September alongside a companion record, Cornbread Nation. O’Brien, a Wheeling, West Virginia, native who formed Hot Rize in 1978, produced it. It won the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album at the 2006 ceremony, and one of its songs, “Look Down That Lonesome Road,” credited to O’Brien, was named IBMA Song of the Year.

The twelve tracks combine folk songs from Ireland and the United States with newer writing. “Pretty Fair Maid in the Garden,” “Fair Flowers of the Valley” and “Foreign Lander” are credited as traditional; on “Fair Flowers” O’Brien sings with his sister Mollie, and on “Foreign Lander” he plays fiddle with Edgar Meyer on arco bass. The title song is by Pete Goble, “Long Black Veil” by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin, with Darrell Scott singing and Dan Dugmore on pedal steel, and “Early Morning Rain” by Gordon Lightfoot, with Chris Thile on mandolin and Stuart Duncan on fiddle. “Buffalo Skinners” is credited as traditional and has only O’Brien’s guitar behind his voice, while “Look Down That Lonesome Road” brings in Charlie Cushman on banjo, Jerry Douglas on resonator guitar and Dan Tyminski on vocals.
