Fiddler’s Green cover

Fiddler's Green, released in 2005, found Tim O'Brien at a characteristic point of creative restlessness, drawing on the broadest possible range of the Anglo-American folk tradition and reinterpreting it through the lens of a musician equally at home in bluegrass, Celtic music, old-time, and singer-songwriter forms. O'Brien, the West Virginia-born multi-instrumentalist who had come to prominence as a founding member of Hot Rize, had built a solo career of extraordinary range and consistency. His treatment of 'Buffalo Skinners,' a stark nineteenth-century occupational ballad, sits alongside Gordon Lightfoot's 'Early Morning Rain' and the traditional 'Look Down That Lonesome Road.' The album reflects a musician for whom tradition is not a constraint but a vast resource to be explored with intelligence and humility.
