First Generation Bluegrass (Mando Records 0510) is a studio album from Lester Flatt, the Overton County, Tennessee guitarist and vocalist who had built one of bluegrass's most admired performing identities through his two-decade partnership with Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, presenting material from the foundational era of the genre on a small independent label following his return to traditional acoustic performance after the Nashville Grass years. Flatt plays guitar and sings. The album's title — honoring the generation of performers who first defined what bluegrass sounds like — announces both a program and an aesthetic position: the unadorned traditional approach, without the production elaboration that had characterized some of his later Nashville-era recordings, delivered in the direct voice that made Flatt one of the most immediately recognizable personalities in the tradition.
