Foggy Mountain Gospel (Columbia/Legacy C2K 92574, 2001) collects gospel recordings from Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs' Columbia Records tenure across the 1950s and 1960s. Lester Flatt plays guitar and sings lead throughout; Earl Scruggs commands the five-string banjo; Josh Graves contributes resonator guitar; Paul Warren plays fiddle; and Billy Powers handles bass. The Foggy Mountain Boys held deep personal commitments to the sacred repertoire — Flatt and Scruggs opened many package shows with devotional material — and the Columbia gospel sessions produced some of the group's most fervent and unguarded ensemble playing. This two-disc anthology gathers the principal sacred sides from those years, documenting the band's command of the shape-note hymnal, the hard-gospel sermon song, and the traditional quartet tradition across a span of nearly two decades.
