Foggy Mountain Gospel is a two-CD set of sacred recordings by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys, compiled by Gregg Geller and released by Columbia/Legacy in 2005 (C2K 92574). Its fifty-two tracks date from May 1951 to March 1966. Most were cut in Nashville, beginning at Castle Studio and ending at Columbia’s own studio, and Don Law and Frank Jones are credited as the original producers.

The personnel changes over the fifteen years. The 1951 sides, among them Flatt’s “I’m Working on the Road” and “Get in Line Brother,” have Everett Lilly on mandolin and tenor, Chubby Wise or Howdy Forrester on fiddle, and Jody Rainwater on bass and bass vocal. Curly Seckler is the tenor singer from late 1952, and from 1955 Paul Warren plays fiddle and sings bass while Josh Graves (credited as Buck Graves) plays Dobro. Scruggs moves between banjo and guitar from song to song and sings baritone in most of the quartets. Chet Atkins plays guitar on the September 1955 session, and Mother Maybelle Carter plays autoharp on the four 1961 tracks.

Six songs appear twice. “Bubbling in My Soul,” “Joy Bells,” “Heaven,” “Give Me the Flowers While I’m Living,” “You Can Feel It in Your Soul” and “Give Mother My Crown” were first recorded between 1955 and 1958 and cut again at a single session on 29 October 1959. Four tracks come from concerts. “He Will Set Your Fields on Fire” and “Let the Church Roll On” were recorded at Carnegie Hall on 8 December 1962, and “Paul and Silas” and “No Hiding Place Down Here” at Vanderbilt University’s Neely Auditorium in May 1963, with Billy Powers on second guitar. The last sessions, in December 1965 and March 1966, add Grady Martin and Charlie McCoy on guitar and Murrey Harman Jr. on drums, on songs such as “God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign” and “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
