Gonna Be Movin’ cover

Gonna Be Movin’ was released by Rebel in 1986 (REB-1644). It was Larry Sparks’s third gospel album. It was recorded on 9 and 30 January and 26 February 1986, at Chandler Audio in Ashland, Kentucky. Sparks produced it and sings lead and plays guitar, with Barry Crabtree on banjo, David Harvey on mandolin and fiddle, Larry D. Sparks on bass and tenor vocals, and Harvey also singing baritone. When the album came out, Bluegrass Unlimited’s reviewer described the band as a new edition of the Lonesome Ramblers, musicians Sparks had not, to the reviewer’s knowledge, recorded with before.

Five of the twelve songs are by Emma Smith, and “Let Him Lead You,” “Call Out to Jesus” and “Ole Satan” are credited to Jim Eanes and L. Lowry; one account says Eanes came in person with his guitar to play his songs for Sparks while the band was choosing material. “Gonna Be Movin’” was written by Randall Hylton and was recorded later by Ralph Stanley on his 1992 album Back to the Cross. Stanley also recorded Smith’s “Everything’s Alright” on his 1988 album I’ll Answer the Call. “That Awful Day” is credited to Sparks and Ernest Riley, and “I Shall Not Be Moved” is the traditional hymn.
