David Harvey is an Ohio-born mandolinist and master luthier who heads R&D for the mandolin division at Gibson — son of bluegrass mandolinist Dorsey Harvey, road veteran of Red Allen, Larry Sparks, and Claire Lynch, and designer of roughly 30 Gibson mandolin models.
- Master luthier and head of R&D for the mandolin division at Gibson; oversees and approves Gibson production of mandolins, banjos, and dobros.
- Son of bluegrass mandolinist Dorsey Harvey, who played with Red Allen and Frank Wakefield.
- Started playing mandolin at age 11 and hit the road at age 14 touring with the Red Allen band.
- Joined Larry Sparks's Lonesome Ramblers in the late 1970s.
- Formed The Wild and Blue Band in the 1980s with his wife Jan and her sister Jill Snider; received a "Best New Band" award in 1992.
- Toured with Claire Lynch from 2002 to 2007.
- Has designed roughly 30 new Gibson models, including limited-edition Master Models and a signature Ricky Skaggs model.
- Plays fiddle and guitar in addition to mandolin.
