Gum Tree Canoe is a 1984 album by John Hartford, the eccentric Tennessee songwriter, banjoist, fiddler, and steamboat enthusiast whose career spanned progressive bluegrass, folk revival, and a deeply personal engagement with the cultural history of the Mississippi River. 'Gum Tree Canoe' is a nineteenth-century minstrel song repurposed through Hartford's characteristic affection for antique American vernacular music. The album reflects his ongoing project of recovering and inhabiting material most musicians had left behind. Hartford's records of this period have the feel of a brilliant eccentric working exactly the way he pleased, without regard for commercial expectations.
