Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs

Roy Acuff and His Smoky Mountain Boys

Album · 1963 · Hickory Records

Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs was issued by Hickory in November 1963 as LPM/LPS 117. Roy Acuff, born in 1903 at Maynardville, Tennessee, had been recording for Hickory since the late 1950s, and the songs were cut in Nashville on 14 August 1963 in a session produced by Wesley Rose. Two months earlier, on 12 June 1963, Acuff and Rose had recorded the material for Roy Acuff Sings American Folk Songs, Hickory LPM/LPS 115.

The program is gospel: “Somebody Touched Me,” “Turn Your Radio On,” “Jesus Died for Me,” “Wait for the Light to Shine,” “Lord, Build Me a Cabin in Glory,” “That Glory Bound Train,” “I Saw the Light,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “It’s All Right Now,” “Traveling the Highway Home” and “Glory Is Coming.” The album was reissued in 1972 on Hickory LPS 158 as I Saw the Light, and again in 2004 as part of the Ace CD set CDCHD 999.
