Album · 1991 · Flying Fish FF 566

Hartford and Hartford (Flying Fish Records FF 566, 1991) is a studio duet album from John Hartford and his son Jamie Hartford, documenting the mutual musical affection between the author of "Gentle on My Mind" and the younger musician who grew up inside his father's unconventional creative world. John Hartford plays banjo, fiddle, and sings; Jamie Hartford plays guitar and sings; Mark Howard plays mandolin; and Roy Huskey Jr. holds the string bass. The album mixes traditional fiddle tunes, original Hartford compositions, and pieces from the Appalachian repertoire both father and son inhabited, presenting a father-son musical conversation that differs in spirit from John Hartford's solo work — less eccentric and more plainly warm — while retaining the old-time sensibility he carried throughout his career.
