Jamie Hartford
Jamie Hartford is a singer, guitarist and songwriter, the son of the songwriter and fiddler John Hartford. He made two albums with his father, Hartford & Hartford (1991) and Hamilton Ironworks (2000), and has recorded his own songs, a mix of rockabilly, blues and rock and roll, under his own name and with the Jamie Hartford Band.
He came to music by way of cover bands, traveling across the United States and Canada. He then began working with the Nashville producer and songwriter Jack Clement, a frequent collaborator of his father’s, playing guitar on Clement’s sessions. He toured with his father and with John Prine, and filled in for the guitarist Albert Lee in the Everly Brothers’ band, before forming a band of his own that became a regular on the Nashville club scene.
Hartford & Hartford was recorded around May 1991 at the Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa in Nashville and released by Flying Fish. Jamie sang and played mandolin, and he wrote two of its eleven songs, “Painful Memories” and “She’s Still Gonna Break Your Heart.” Mark Howard produced it and played guitar, with Roy Huskey Jr. on bass and Kenny Malone on percussion.
His first solo album, What About Yes, came out on Paladin in 1997, with Pat McLaughlin on guitar and Jim Lauderdale among those helping. In August 2000, at Overdub Lane in Durham, North Carolina, he and his father recorded Hamilton Ironworks, released by Rounder as by John Hartford and Jamie Hartford, with Bob Carlin producing and Mike Compton and Larry Perkins in the band. It was nominated for the Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2002. The Jamie Hartford Band, with Ray Flacke on guitar, released Live (Wildwood, 2000) and Stuff That Works (Earwave, 2004).
In 2005 New Sheriff released Part of Your History: The Songs of John Hartford, his album of his father’s songs. He played electric guitar on Standard Songs for Average People (Oh Boy, 2007), the album John Prine made with Mac Wiseman.
