Highwayman, released by Columbia in May 1985, brought Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson together for the first time as a quartet, and its success gave the group the name The Highwaymen. Produced by Chips Moman in Nashville, the album’s ten songs are shared out verse by verse among the four voices. Jimmy Webb’s title song went to No. 1 on the country chart and Guy Clark’s “Desperados Waiting for a Train” followed it to No. 15, becoming the most widely heard recording of Clark’s song. Other tracks include Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” Woody Guthrie’s “Deportee” and Ed Bruce’s “The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over.”
