"I Wonder Where You Are Tonight," released in 1992 on Arhoolie Records (Arhoolie CD 5006), is the CD reissue of Del McCoury's debut as a bandleader — originally released in 1968 as "Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass" (Arhoolie F 5006) — with two previously unissued bonus tracks added. The core sessions, recorded December 9–10, 1967 in California, feature McCoury (guitar, vocals) alongside Bill Emerson (banjo), Billy Baker (fiddle), Wayne Yates (mandolin), and Tommy Neal (bass) — fellow alumni of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. Made at age twenty-four, just after McCoury left Monroe's band, the record captures his crystalline high tenor in its earliest prime. It stands as one of the most important debut recordings in the traditional bluegrass canon and a foundational document of McCoury's singular career.
