IIIrd Tyme Out cover

IIIrd Tyme Out, released by Rebel Records in 1991 (REB-CD-1691), was the first album by the band of that name. It was recorded in Nashville at Music Row Audio over four days in June 1991 (the 9th, 10th, 11th and 25th) and mixed on the 25th and 26th.

The band formed in Georgia that year when singer and guitarist Russell Moore, bassist Ray Deaton and fiddler Mike Hartgrove left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; mandolinist Alan Bibey and banjoist Terry Baucom joined soon afterward. The name came from the fact that for most of the members this was their third professional band. All five play on the album, with Deaton on electric bass, and Moore sings lead throughout while Deaton, Baucom and Bibey take turns on tenor, baritone and bass parts.

The twelve songs combine recent writing with older material. Pete Goble, Wesley Golding, G.E. Wright and Carl Jackson are among the songwriters, and the older pieces include Molly O’Day’s “When My Time Comes to Go” and “Thanks a Lot,” a song Ernest Tubb recorded. Jackson’s “Erase the Miles,” the closing track, was a hit single that reached the top of the bluegrass charts, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. The band went on to win IBMA Vocal Group of the Year seven years in a row.
