It's Bread and Water for Curly Ray Cline (Rebel Records SLP 1566) is a studio album from Ray "Curly Ray" Cline, the Floyd County, Virginia fiddler who became one of the most beloved figures in the Ralph Stanley circle through his decades with the Clinch Mountain Boys, presented here in an album-length format that places his fiddle playing and comedic personality at the center of the program. Cline plays fiddle and sings; Ralph Stanley plays banjo and sings; Keith Whitley plays guitar and sings; Jack Cooke holds the bass; and Renfro Proffitt contributes additional work. The album's title captures Cline's persona — self-deprecating, humor-forward, the perpetually underpaid working musician sustained by little more than the music and the fellowship — while delivering the old-time fiddle tunes, traditional songs, and comedic performances that made his live appearances a reliable highlight of Clinch Mountain Boys shows across his long tenure.
