It’s Hard to Tell the Singer from the Song was released by Rounder in 1987 (Rounder 0226). It was recorded on 20 and 23 January 1986 at Nashville Sound Connection in Nashville, with Hazel Dickens and Ken Irwin as producers and Bil VornDick as engineer. Charles Wolfe wrote the liner notes.

Two bands split the eleven tracks. On 20 January, Pat Enright played guitar, Allen Shelton banjo, Mike Compton mandolin, Jim Buchanan fiddle and Roy Huskey Jr. bass, on “Don’t Bother to Cry,” “Do Memories Haunt You,” “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow,” “Will Jesus Wash the Bloodstains from Your Hands” and “California Cottonfields.” On 23 January, Tommy Goldsmith played guitar, Jerry Douglas Dobro, Blaine Sprouse fiddle and Huskey bass, on the other six, with Russ Barenberg adding lead guitar on two of them. Dickens sings lead throughout, and the harmony singers are Cheryl Warren, Glen Duncan, Kathy Chiavola and Pat Enright.

Dickens wrote the title song, “Hills of Home,” “You’ll Get No More of Me,” “A Few Old Memories” and “Will Jesus Wash the Bloodstains from Your Hands.” The other writers include Bob Dylan (“Only a Hobo”), Dallas Frazier (“California Cottonfields”), Lonnie Coleman (“Do Memories Haunt You”) and Charlie McGuire (“Play Us a Waltz”).
