Jim and Jesse Show from 1972 captures Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys in the setting they occupied comfortably throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s: the country and bluegrass performance circuit. Jesse McReynolds's cross-picking mandolin technique — a method of applying three-finger banjo rolls to the mandolin — remained one of the genre's most distinctive instrumental innovations, and Jim's lead vocals were among the most reliable in traditional bluegrass. "I Heard the Bluebirds Sing" is representative of the duo's blend of sentiment and technical accomplishment. The McReynolds brothers had been recording since 1951 and by this point had developed a well-practiced ease in front of audiences and in the studio. The album is a solid midcareer document of an act that maintained high standards across a very long recording career.
