The Jim and Jesse Show was recorded in 1972 by Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys, mostly at DBM Studios in Nashville. Two tracks, “It’s a Long Long Way (to the Top of the World)” and “Rocky Top,” were cut at C.B. Herndon Studio in Varnville, South Carolina. Jim McReynolds played guitar and Jesse McReynolds mandolin, using the cross-picking method Jesse invented himself. Vic Jordan played banjo, Jimmy Brock fiddle and Keith McReynolds bass, and Carol Johnson sang with the brothers on “Wishful Thinking” and “Rocky Top.”
The album has twelve songs, among them “Cotton Mill Man,” “Blue Ridge Mountain Blues,” “Your Old Love Letters” and “I Heard the Bluebirds Sing.” It first came out in 1972 on the brothers’ Old Dominion label under catalog number PRS-498-04, and Old Dominion pressed it again in 1977 as OD 498-04.
