Laid Back (Pinecastle Records PRC 1065, 1997) is a studio album credited to the Masters, a supergroup of veteran bluegrass and acoustic musicians gathered around a program of instrumentals and traditional material. Eddie Adcock plays banjo; Martha Adcock plays rhythm guitar; Jesse McReynolds plays mandolin; Kenny Baker plays fiddle; and Missy Raines holds the bass. The ensemble brings together decades of combined experience — Adcock and McReynolds with careers rooted in early bluegrass history, Baker as the canonical Kentucky fiddle voice, and Raines as one of the most musical bass players in the genre. The informal, unhurried quality of the sessions suits the album's title: Laid Back documents an encounter of accomplished peers more interested in the warmth of the ensemble than in technical demonstration.
