Laid Back (Pinecastle PRC 1065) was released in 1997 by the Masters, a band of Eddie Adcock on banjo, Jesse McReynolds on mandolin, Kenny Baker on fiddle and Josh Graves on dobro. Martha Adcock plays rhythm guitar and Missy Raines plays bass; Eddie Adcock also plays guitar and rhythm mandolin on the album. The Bluegrass Discography dates the twelve tracks to 1996 at the Delivery Room in Pegram, Tennessee. Eddie Adcock and Billy Troy produced it, Clark Williams engineered and mixed it, and Hank Widick wrote the liner notes. The Masters had previously made two albums for CMH, The Masters (1989) and Saturday Night Fish Fry (1990).

The program draws on the players’ own catalogs. Adcock wrote “Draggin’ the Cow” and Baker wrote “Happy Time Waltz”; “Stoney Creek” is credited to Jim & Jesse, “Jerusalem’s Ridge” and “Roanoke” to Bill Monroe, and “Evelina” and “Foggy Mountain Rock” to writers who include Josh Graves. The rest is traditional and hymn material: “Wayfarin’ Stranger,” “St. Anne’s Reel,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” (arranged by Graves), “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Bells of St. Mary’s.”
