Lester Raymond Flatt was recorded at Sound Shop in Nashville on 17 September 1975 and issued that November on Flying Fish (FF 015). It came about six years after Flatt and Earl Scruggs parted in 1969, when Flatt formed the Nashville Grass. Michael Melford and Lance LeRoy are listed as its producers.

Flatt sings lead and plays guitar. Curly Seckler plays mandolin and sings harmony, Kenny Ingram plays banjo and sings harmony, Paul Warren plays fiddle and sings harmony, and the other players are Buddy Spicher on fiddle, Charlie Nixon on resonator guitar, Marty Stuart on guitar and mandolin and Jack Hicks on bass. There are twelve songs and four short spoken “Remarks” tracks. The songs include “The Wreck of the Old ’97,” “Listen to the Mockingbird,” “My Cabin in Caroline,” credited to Flatt and Scruggs, and “Foggy Mountain Chimes,” an instrumental by Scruggs; Flatt wrote “Down the Road” and “I’m Gonna Sleep with One Eye Open,” and Seckler is credited with “That Old Book of Mine.”
