Live and Let Live cover

Live and Let Live (Folkways FTS 31065, 1979) finds Red Allen leading a later edition of the Kentuckians centered on family: his son Greg Allen sings baritone and plays guitar, making father-son harmonies a featured element throughout. Buddy Griffin plays fiddle and Dorsey Harvey plays mandolin. Recorded at Jack Casey Studios in Columbus, Ohio, in spring 1978, the album documents Allen's ability to sustain a working bluegrass band outside Nashville and the D.C. hub, drawing on the Ohio bluegrass community. Allen's voice — warm but edged with road-worn authority — remains the anchor, and the record demonstrates the durability of his distinctive blend of Kentucky hard-country feeling and sophisticated vocal arranging across more than two decades as an independent bandleader.
