Live and Well (Sugar Hill SUG-CD 3998, released September 14, 2004) was recorded on December 12 and 13, 2002, at the Celebrity Theatre at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The concerts were part of Dolly Parton’s Halos & Horns tour, her first national tour in more than ten years, and the album was released as a two-CD set with a concert DVD of the same performance. Parton produced it with Gary Davis and her band, the Blueniques.
The set draws on her three recent bluegrass-leaning albums, The Grass Is Blue, Little Sparrow and Halos & Horns, with songs such as “The Grass Is Blue,” “Little Sparrow,” “Mountain Angel,” “Halos and Horns” and “I’m Gone,” alongside older hits including “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene” and “9 to 5.” It also has covers of “Rocky Top,” “After the Gold Rush,” “If” and “Stairway to Heaven,” an a cappella medley of four of her hits, and “We Irish,” a new song written for the Irish dates of her European tour. Among the Blueniques are Gary Davis (banjo, acoustic guitar), Randy Kohrs (resonator guitar) and Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle).
