Live at McCabe’s

Norman Blake

Album · 1976 · Takoma D 1052

Live at McCabe’s was recorded at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California, and released by Takoma Records in 1976 (D-1052). Doug Decker produced and engineered it. Discogs notes that it is the first of a series of recordings made at the shop. Norman Blake plays guitar and fiddle and Nancy Blake plays cello, and the album is credited to both of them.

Most of the set is Norman Blake’s guitar. He plays “Nine Pound Hammer” and Claude Grant’s “Sweet Heaven When I Die” to open, then “Border Widow,” one of his own tunes, which is where he introduces Nancy, who accompanies his fiddle on cello. A “G” medley of “Green Leaf Fancy,” “Fields of November” and “Fort Smith” follows. The second side has his “Dry Grass on the High Fields,” an instrumental “John Hardy,” “Arkansas Traveler,” a medley of “Bully of the Town,” “Bonaparte’s Retreat” and his own “Richland Avenue Rag,” and his “Harvey’s Reel.” The record was reissued on CD in 1987 with Directions.
