Live! At McClure, Virginia is a two-LP set on Rebel Records (SLP 1554/55), released in 1976 and recorded on 23–25 May 1975 at Ralph Stanley’s fifth annual Memorial Festival in McClure, Virginia. Although credited to Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, the set is a festival sampler: the Clinch Mountain Boys account for seven of its 25 tracks, eight counting the closing jam session. The band was Stanley on banjo, Keith Whitley on guitar and vocals, Ricky Lee on lead guitar, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Jack Cooke on bass.
The rest of the program comes from Bill Monroe, who joins Stanley on “I’m On My Way Back to the Old Home”; Don Reno and Bill Harrell; Larry Sparks; the Outdoor Plumbing Company; the Goins Brothers; Jimmy Martin, heard with Stanley on “White Dove”; the Sullivan Family; Raymond Fairchild; the Country Gentlemen, with Charlie Waller, James Bailey, Doyle Lawson and Bill Yates; the Marshall Family; and the fiddler Leslie Keith, who plays “Cotton Eyed Joe” with Stanley. Charles R. Freeland produced the album, with Ronnie Freeland as engineer, and Rebel reissued it on CD in 1992 as REBCD1118.
