Live in Kansas 1986 is a concert recording from Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, the western swing and honky-tonk alter-ego ensemble of Colorado-based Hot Rize — Tim O'Brien, Charles Sawtelle, Nick Forster, and Pete Wernick — performing in comedic stage personas during a 1986 Kansas tour date. O'Brien sings and plays guitar as the frontman; Sawtelle plays guitar; Forster holds the bass; and Wernick plays drums, departing from his banjo role in Hot Rize's bluegrass context. The Trailblazers personas allowed the four Hot Rize members to explore western swing and vintage honky-tonk in a comedic setting that complemented their acoustic string-band identity, and the live recording captures the loose, crowd-engaged performance style that made their sets a fan favorite on the Americana festival circuit.
