Live is the first live album by Laurie Lewis, released in 2008 on her own Spruce and Maple Music label (SMM 2004) and credited to Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands. Fred Forssell recorded it on three nights in March 2007: at the First United Methodist Church in Corvallis, Oregon, on the 9th; at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in Longview, Washington, on the 10th; and at the Cashmere Community Coffeehouse in Cashmere, Washington, on the 11th. Lewis mixed it with Tom Size at Tomland.
The band is Lewis on fiddle, Tom Rozum on mandolin, Scott Huffman on guitar, Craig Smith on banjo and Todd Phillips on string bass. Tatiana Hargreaves joins on fiddle for “O My Malissa / How Old Are You?” Lewis shares the singing. Huffman sings lead on Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever” and the Carter Family’s “Worried Man Blues.” Rozum leads “The Rope,” unaccompanied, and Irving Berlin’s “Without My Walking Stick.”
The nineteen tracks, one of them the band introductions, draw on Lewis’s own songs and on other writers’. Her songs include “Love Chooses You,” a 1989 country hit for Kathy Mattea, “Texas Bluebonnets” and the unaccompanied “The Wood Thrush’s Song.” Among the other songs are Jimmy Martin’s “Before the Sun Goes Down,” Si Kahn’s “Just a Lie,” Sarah Elizabeth Campbell’s “Geraldine and Ruthie Mae,” the traditional “Diamond Joe” and “Who Will Watch the Home Place?,” the IBMA’s Song of the Year for 1994.
