Livin’ in the Past cover

Livin' in the Past captures the Kentucky Colonels, the band that formed around Roland and Clarence White and played a central role in the West Coast bluegrass scene of the early 1960s. Clarence White's flat-picking guitar work, which would later revolutionize the instrument's role in country and rock contexts through his work with the Byrds, is the central attraction here. Roland White's mandolin playing and vocals anchored the vocal blend, while the ensemble represented a California take on Kentucky bluegrass that was technically exacting without losing the music's essential earthiness.
