The John Hartford Stringband's Memories of John, released on Compass Records (7 4539-2) in April 2010, is a tribute and memorial record by Hartford's own working ensemble—not a celebrity tribute project—built from previously unreleased Hartford recordings and new performances by the five musicians who played with him through the final years of his life. Chris Sharp plays acoustic guitar and sings; Mike Compton, mandolin; Bob Carlin, banjo; Matt Combs, fiddle; Mark Schatz, upright bass. Hartford's own voice and playing appear on several tracks alongside his band. Guests include Béla Fleck, Alison Brown, and Tim O'Brien. The album received a Grammy nomination and captures Hartford's old-time and Appalachian musical vocabulary in the hands of the musicians who knew it best.
