“Homer the Roamer” is an original fiddle tune by John Hartford, the singer, banjoist, fiddler, and songwriter who spent his later years devoted to old-time fiddle music. He wrote it in June 1993, and it later appeared in his collection of original fiddle tunes.
The piece is a three-part melodic fiddle tune, suited equally to fiddle and mandolin and admired for its sweeping, almost composed quality. After Hartford’s death in 2001, the tune was carried forward by the musicians who had played alongside him.
This recording features the Hartford String Band, the ensemble of his former bandmates, and appears on the album “Memories of John,” a tribute to Hartford and his music.
