Modern Day Man cover

Modern Day Man, released in 2016 on Rounder (11661-9111-2), is Josh Williams's bluegrass-meets-country crossover and his first record after six years of sobriety following his departure from Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. Williams (guitar/vocals) is backed by an elite Nashville session list — Sam Bush, Sierra Hull on mandolin, Aubrey Haynie, Rob Ickes, Scott Vestal, Aaron McDaris on banjo, Doug Jernigan on pedal steel — with J.D. Crowe coming out of production retirement specifically for this record, his protégé's comeback statement. The repertoire pairs Williams's versatile baritone with contemporary writers' songs plus a couple of standards. The arrangements lean further toward country instrumentation than Williams's earlier records, reflecting his Nashville session work of the period.
