Modern Day Man was released on 25 March 2016 on Rounder Records (11661-9111-2). It is Josh Williams’s first album since Down Home (2010), and it came six years into his recovery from addiction, after he had been dismissed from Rhonda Vincent’s band, the Rage, and later returned to it. J.D. Crowe produced it and Steve Chandler engineered it. Sessions were held at Hilltop Studios in Nashville.
Williams sings lead and plays guitar. The credited players are Sam Bush and Sierra Hull on mandolin, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, Rob Ickes on Dobro, Aaron McDaris, Scott Vestal and Jason McKendree on banjo, and Doug Jernigan on pedal steel. John Cowan sings harmony on “Lonesome Lesson Learned,” and Buddy Robertson is credited with vocals on “Always Have, Always Will.” All but one of the twelve tracks include drums.
“Another Town,” a Tom T. Hall song, was recorded by Keith Whitley both with J.D. Crowe and on his own, and it and “Girl from the Canyon” had appeared on the 1982 New South album Somewhere Between. “Let It Go” was written by Ronnie Bowman and Jerry Douglas, and the album closes with Williams alone on guitar for Corey Smith’s “Sweet Little Boy.” “Mordecai,” by Mark Mathewson, had appeared on Williams’s 2004 album Lonesome Highway.
