Mountain Sweetheart was recorded on 11 and 15 March 1979 at Tamara King Studio in Heist op den Berg, Belgium, and released the same year on the Belgian label Racoon Records (RR 118 L). It is credited to Charlie Moore and Smoketown Strut. Moore sings lead and plays guitar. Peter Van Eyck plays banjo and dobro, Jan Michielsen mandolin and Jef Van Gool bass, with Peter Derks joining on vocals. André Van Miert produced and engineered the session, and Rienk Janssen wrote the liner notes.

The twelve songs combine Moore’s own writing with songs from the bluegrass repertoire: he wrote “Mountain Sweetheart,” “She’ll Never Wear a Drunkard’s Ring” and “Tragic Love,” the session also includes Lester Flatt’s “I’ll Never Love Another” and “I’ll Never Shed Another Tear,” Earl Scruggs’s “Fireball,” Jim Eanes’s “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could” and Bill Monroe’s “My Little Georgia Rose,” and traditional pieces such as “Wreck of the Old 97.” Van Eyck sings tenor with Moore on “Mountain Sweetheart” and on “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could.”

Old Homestead Records reissued the album in 1989 as OHS 90184, with a cassette edition (OHCS 90184). Moore, who was born in Piedmont, South Carolina, in 1935, died on 24 December 1979, nine months after the Belgian sessions.
