Never Say Never Again was released by Rural Rhythm on 24 April 2007 (RHY 1031). It is Dwight McCall’s second solo CD, following Kentucky Peace of Mind. McCall had been a member of J.D. Crowe & the New South for about ten years, playing mandolin and singing tenor, and appears with that band on Come On Down to My World and Lefty’s Old Guitar. His father, Jim McCall, had recorded for Rural Rhythm in Earl Taylor & Jim McCall with the Stoney Mountain Boys.

McCall sings lead throughout, plays mandolin on two tracks and plays banjo on “Little Bessie.” Alan Bibey plays mandolin on most of the others, Ron Stewart banjo, fiddle and, on one track, mandolin, Brian Stephens guitar, Harold Nixon bass and Randy Kohrs Dobro. Steve Gulley, Lou Reid, Rickey Wasson and Missy Werner sing harmony on individual tracks. The fourteen songs include McCall’s own “Goodbye My Friend,” “Don’t Break My Heart Again” and “He Never Turned Away”; the title song by Wayne Winkle and Craig Market; Mike Evans’s Civil War song “Logan’s Crossroads”; Michael Martin Murphey’s “Lost River,” with Bibey on the mandolin kick-off; Jon Weisberger’s “Pathway of My Savior”; and the traditional “Blue Eyed Boston Boy,” “Little Bessie” and “Goin’ Across the Sea.” There is no instrumental.
