Never Say Never Again, released in 2007 on Rural Rhythm (RHY 1031), is mandolinist Dwight McCall's debut solo album after roughly a decade as J.D. Crowe's lead singer and mandolin player in the New South. McCall (lead vocals/mandolin/banjo) recorded with his New South colleagues — Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, Rickey Wasson on guitar and baritone vocals — plus Alan Bibey on mandolin, Steve Gulley and Lou Reid on harmonies, Randy Kohrs on Dobro, and Harold Nixon on bass. The set is traditional-leaning contemporary bluegrass with tight ensemble vocals and mandolin-forward arrangements, drawing directly on the New South sound. The record functioned as McCall's statement of solo identity inside the institutional shadow of Crowe's band.
