New South Live is a Japanese LP on Trio Records (PA 6326), recorded at a concert at Kubo Hall in Tokyo on 30 August 1975. J.D. Crowe played banjo, Tony Rice guitar, Ricky Skaggs mandolin, Jerry Douglas Dobro and Bobby Slone bass and fiddle, the same five-piece band that had recorded the album The New South for Rounder in January of that year. Rice, Skaggs and Crowe share the vocals.
The ten tracks mix bluegrass standards and songs from the country-rock and folk side. They include “East Virginia Blues,” “Banks of the Ohio” and two Flatt and Scruggs songs, “Why Don’t You Tell Me So” and “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms”; the instrumentals “Stoney Creek” and “Bugle Call Rag”; Jimmy Skinner’s “Dark Hollow”; and the Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman song “Sin City,” Bernie Leadon’s “God’s Own Singer” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “You Are What I Am,” which also appears on the studio album.
