New South Live captures J.D. Crowe and his band in performance during 1975 — the consequential year that produced the canonical Rounder 0044 studio session and saw the New South tour with the lineup of Crowe on banjo, Ricky Skaggs on mandolin, Tony Rice on guitar, Jerry Douglas on dobro, and Bobby Slone on bass. That brief configuration would prove one of the most influential bands the music ever produced — Rice, Skaggs, and Douglas would each go on to define different strands of progressive bluegrass — and live recordings of the group are correspondingly prized. The album catches the band's working stage repertoire in the immediate, unpolished setting Crowe's New South was built for.
