Now That You're Gone, Josh Williams's 2001 debut as a leader, announced a vocalist of uncommon natural ability and a guitarist whose flatpicking roots ran deep. Williams had grown up around serious bluegrass musicians and it shows: the album has the relaxed authority of a player who never needed to prove anything, only to play. "Many a Mile" showcases his ability to inhabit a lyric without overselling it. The record established Williams as one of the more promising young voices in IBMA-aligned bluegrass and launched a career that would take him through stints with several major acts before he returned to bandleading.
