Old Sport (Small Dog a'Barkin', 1995) is a fiddle duo album by John Hartford and Jim "Texas Shorty" Chancellor, recorded at Hartford's Nashville studio from a session made two years earlier. Hartford plays fiddle, banjo, and guitar and sings; Chancellor — one of the most celebrated Texas contest fiddlers of the late twentieth century — plays fiddle throughout. The two approach a shared repertoire of old Southern fiddle tunes with mutual respect and easy informality; Chancellor's Texas swing-inflected bowing and Hartford's more eclectic old-time sensibility create a complementary tension across the session. Old Sport belongs to Hartford's sustained late-career project of documenting fiddle music that existed outside the bluegrass mainstream, here in direct conversation with one of the acknowledged masters of a distinct regional style.
