Old Time Country Music

Mike Seeger

Album · 1962

Old Time Country Music, released in 1962 on Folkways (FA 2325), is Mike Seeger's solo statement of the New Lost City Ramblers aesthetic. Seeger plays fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, Jew's harp, and sings, multi-tracking the entire record himself at his Roosevelt, New Jersey home in August and September 1962. The arrangements are a one-man field trip through 1920s and 1930s commercial hillbilly recordings, polished and reverently reproduced. Seeger annotated each track with the specific 78 RPM source he had learned it from, turning the LP into a discographer's primer that doubled as both performance and ethnomusicology — a hybrid form Seeger had been developing since the New Lost City Ramblers' first Folkways records of 1958 and 1959.
