Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys

Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys recorded Old Time Music in August 1967 in a home studio in Dayton, Ohio, for the Dayton label Jalyn (JLP 118). Carter Stanley had died on 1 December 1966, and Ralph was leading the band on his own. The musicians were Ralph on banjo, Larry Sparks and Melvin Goins on guitars, Curley Lambert on mandolin, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Jack Lynch on bass.

The twelve tracks divide evenly between songs and instrumentals. Side one holds “Knoxville Girl,” “John Henry,” “Poor Ellen Smith,” “East Virginia Blues,” “Long Journey Home” and “Going ‘Round This World”; on “East Virginia Blues” Ralph plays mandolin in place of banjo. Side two is all instrumentals: “Chicken Reel,” “Mississippi Sawyer,” “Billy in the Lowground,” “Cackling Hen,” “Going Down Town” and “Bonnie and Clyde’s Hop,” the last written by Jack Lynch. The label’s own notes call every other track public domain or traditional.
