Our Town cover

Our Town pairs Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin in a collection of traditional and vernacular American songs reflecting both musicians' deep engagement with pre-commercial folk and string band traditions. Stecher, a Berkeley-based multi-instrumentalist, and Brislin, a singer and guitarist with roots in the California folk scene, had by 1993 developed an ensemble rapport of unusual intimacy. Their approach avoids the documentary stiffness that can afflict revivalist recordings, instead finding an emotional directness that gives traditional songs new currency. Our Town situates their work in community, the album title evoking a sense of shared musical belonging across time.
