Pickin’ in Holland is a 1982 LP on the Dutch label Strictly Country Records (SCR 9). The release notes on Discogs say it was recorded live at the “Home of Strictly Country” in Harpel, the Netherlands, on 31 March 1982, and the Bluegrass Discography gives the same date and place for all eleven tracks. The credited band is Bob Paisley and the Southern Grass: Bob Paisley on guitar and vocals, his son Dan Paisley on guitar and vocals, Dick Staber on mandolin and vocals, Paul Silvius on banjo and vocals, Leroy Mumma on fiddle and Mike Paisley on bass. A.G. & Kate are credited as special guests on vocals. Gé Voskuylen engineered the recording, and Rienk Janssen wrote the liner notes.
The program runs from “Dark Hollow” and “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains” to Stanley Brothers, Carter Family and Bill Monroe material: Ralph and Carter Stanley’s “Think of What You’ve Done,” A.P. Carter’s “Darlin’ Nellie Across the Sea,” Monroe’s “Hope You Have Learned,” and the instrumentals “I Heard the Lonesome Whistle Blow” and “Tennessee Cutup Breakdown,” credited to Don Reno.
Bob Paisley, born in North Carolina in 1931 and raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania, formed the Southern Grass in 1980 after some twenty years leading the Southern Mountain Boys with banjoist Ted Lundy. By the family’s own account the band toured regularly in Europe, Japan and Canada.
