Pickin’ in Holland

Bob Paisley and the Southern Grass

Album · 1982 · Strictly Country SCR 9

Pickin' in Holland (Strictly Country SCR 9) is a studio album from Bob Paisley and the Southern Grass, the Virginia and Maryland bluegrass ensemble recorded for the Dutch independent label Strictly Country to document their traditional bluegrass approach for the European acoustic audience. Bob Paisley plays guitar and sings lead; Danny Paisley plays guitar and sings; Mike Paisley plays guitar; Leroy Mumma plays banjo; Paul Silvius contributes instrumental work; and Dick Staber holds the bass. Strictly Country Records, operating from the Netherlands, specialized in documenting American regional bluegrass acts whose traditional approach had won them followings among European audiences hungry for the unvarnished acoustic style that the American mainstream had largely moved away from, and the album captures the Paisley ensemble's close family vocal harmony and straightforward traditional repertoire in the same format that earned them their regional American following.
