Mike Paisley
Mike Paisley, also credited as Michael Paisley, is a bass player who played upright bass in his father Bob Paisley’s band, the Southern Grass, from the early 1980s, and later in the same band under his brother Danny Paisley.
Bob Paisley formed the Southern Grass in 1980, after the death of his longtime partner, the banjo player Ted Lundy, and Danny Paisley sang and played guitar alongside him. Mike was on bass by 1982: he played it on Pickin’ in Holland, issued that year by the Dutch label Strictly Country, and shared the bass parts with Earl Yager on An Old Love Affair (Brandywine, 1982). He stayed with the band through the following decade and a half, playing on I Still Love You Yet (Mountain Laurel, 1985), Home of Light & Love (Mountain Laurel, 1988), recorded at the Wizards in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, Live in Holland (Strictly Country, 1991), Back to the Blue Ridge (Brandywine, 1994) and Steeped in Tradition (Brandywine, 1998), recorded at Bias Recording in Springfield, Virginia. Over those years the band’s banjo players included Paul Silvius, Randy Stewart, Steve Huber and Richard Underwood, and its fiddlers Leroy Mumma, Ward Stout and Jack Leiderman.
After Bob Paisley died in November 2004, Danny took over the Southern Grass, with Ted Lundy’s sons T.J. on fiddle and Bobby on banjo, so that the sons of the original partners were playing together. In 2008 Mike was the band’s upright bass player on The Room Over Mine, Danny’s first album for Rounder, with Donnie Eldreth Jr. on mandolin.
