Pickin', Praisin', and Singin': Hymns From the Mountain, released July 15, 2008 on Rural Rhythm (RHY 328), is Pine Mountain Railroad's eighth album and first all-gospel project. The East Tennessee band — Cody Shuler on mandolin and vocals, Bill McBee on bass and vocals, Matt "Scooter" Flake on fiddle and vocals, Jerry Cole on guitar and vocals, Dale Thomas on banjo and vocals — works sixteen tracks that blend mountain-hymn standards like "Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages" with new originals, all delivered in tight five-part harmony. The release came as Pine Mountain Railroad leaned more deliberately into the bluegrass-gospel circuit, where Shuler's band would spend the next decade as a regular fixture on church and festival programs.
