Reap What You Sow

Foghorn Stringband

Album · 2004 · Self-released

Reap What You Sow is a self-released album by Foghorn Stringband, a Portland, Oregon old-time string band whose founding members met at the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser, Idaho, in 2000. It was recorded in March 2004 and came out in August 2004; the first printing was 3,000 copies. Alan Garren engineered it, and the band recorded with a single stereo microphone, without overdubs or multitracking.

The lineup was Caleb Klauder on mandolin and vocals, Sammy Lind on fiddle and vocals, Kevin Sandri on guitar and vocals, P.T. Grover Jr. on banjo and Brian Bagdonas on bass. Thirteen tracks include “Georgia Railroad,” “Black Mountain Rag,” “Five Miles of Ellum Wood,” “Dying Hobo,” “Fall On My Knees” and “Sow ‘Em on the Mountain.”

The sessions also produced Boombox Squaredance, a collection of outtakes released in spring 2007. Reap What You Sow was the band’s second self-released album, after Rattlesnake Tidal Wave (2002), and was followed by Weiser Sunrise on Nettwerk America in August 2005.
