Recorded Live at Vanderbilt University captures a concert by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys at Neely Auditorium on the Vanderbilt campus in Nashville on the evening of 2 May 1963. Columbia producers Don Law and Frank Jones recorded it, and the label issued it in March 1964 as CL 2134 in mono and CS 8934 in stereo.

Flatt plays guitar and Scruggs banjo, with Paul Warren on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro (listed as Buck Graves), Jake Tullock on bass and Billy Powers on a third guitar. Flatt sings lead, Tullock tenor and Scruggs baritone on the quartet numbers, with Warren taking the bass part on several. The 13 tracks include “Lost All My Money,” “Paul and Silas,” “Across the Blue Ridge Mountains,” “Going Back to Harlan” and “Going Up Cripple Creek,” and the instrumentals include “Cannonball Blues,” “Old Leather Britches” and “Old Folks.”
