Rhythm of the Road, Vol. 1: Incident in Atlanta is a three-CD set of the String Cheese Incident’s concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta on 17 November 2000, the first night of a two-night run there. SCI Fidelity Records released it on 9 November 2010 as SCIFI 1143, around the tenth anniversary of the show. It was the first volume in Rhythm of the Road, the band’s series of remastered archival concerts, and it contains the whole performance. The series takes its name from a Bill Nershi song on the band’s second album.
The Colorado band’s lineup was Bill Nershi on acoustic guitar, Michael Kang on mandolin and violin, Kyle Hollingsworth on keyboards and accordion, Keith Moseley on bass and Michael Travis on drums and percussion. Banjo player Tony Furtado sat in for seven songs. He came in during “Luckie Street Jam” and stayed for the nine-minute “Orange Blossom Special” that follows it in the first set. He came back for Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight” and “Black Clouds,” and switched to guitar for Peter Gabriel’s “Shakin’ the Tree.”
The encore opened with two bluegrass numbers played without Travis and Hollingsworth. The first was “The Old Home Place,” written by Dean Webb and Mitch Jayne and first recorded by the Dillards. The second was the instrumental “Shenandoah Breakdown.” Among the other eighteen tracks are “Ramble On,” “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” and a nearly twenty-minute “Impressions.”
