San Francisco 1968

Vern and Ray

Album · 1968 · Arhoolie CD 524

San Francisco 1968 is a live recording by Vern Williams and Ray Park with Herb Pedersen, released in 2006 by Arhoolie Records (ARH-CD-524) from a concert at the San Francisco State Folk Festival on April 26, 1968. Vern Williams (mandolin, vocals) and Ray Park (guitar, fiddle, vocals)—Northern California's pioneering bluegrass duo, who had emigrated from Arkansas and established themselves as West Coast leaders in the tradition from around 1960—are joined by Herb Pedersen (banjo, vocals) and Howard Courtney (bass). The recording documents one of the hardest-driving traditional bluegrass trios in the genre's history in a living archive of the San Francisco folk revival.
